A dream fulfilled

He finally travelled all this way. Now, I watched in both joy and sadness as he slowly made his way down that wooded path. My happiness came from the knowledge that he was soon going to experience it in person — The General Sherman Tree for real.

My sadness was from realizing how much of a struggle it was for him. It was a long quarter mile walk from the upper parking lot downhill to the General Sherman Tree — the worlds largest Sequoia.

Dad underwent knee surgery years prior and even though he could still get around fine enough, it was still not at a brisk pace. The degradation of his physical health from his job and daily regiment of multiple super sugary, over-caffeinated sodas and regular fast food were on full display. He was not going to let this trip be ruined by any physical shortcomings.

However, the power of human will is impressive.

I had flown him out to L.A. the day before and his body was still on east coast time. We then left at 4:00am to make the 3.5 hour drive to Sequoia National Park. He had to be tired, but I knew he was energized. He had dreamt and talked about seeing this tree as long as I can remember.

It was originally going to be part of his retirement…
