Growing up poor had great benefits
Some of you may remember a time not all that long ago when people and things were somewhat different. Looking back on certain life events has a somewhat blurry, but preferred view. We remember them by smells, sounds, music, and even sometimes the way a place seems familiar yet out of place.
Personally, I can look back at the schools I grew up in with my fellow students. I can remember the smell of the first day of school. I can remember the feel of my plastic He-Man lunch box and the thermos that always leaked soup. I can still hear and smell the cafeteria.
These old experiences are never too far from memory when I see my old elementary school. It hasn’t changed all too much. It has a much safer playground now.
I’d like to believe if we had such a “facility” for recreation we’d be angered or insulted and not all that interested in recess. Right… We didn’t care as long as we were not inside.
What I’m getting at is that I can see this place in my head even though it may have been a lot different than I can truly recall. The reason this deception is possible is that I accept that it was over thirty years ago. Memories have a way of distorting over time and in many cases become a preferred viewpoint of how life is supposed to be.
