How owning a business was more of a gig job

It has been declared we are in a “gig economy”. To put this quite basically, we have a large portion of the workforce that is doing task related jobs. For example: You’ll have a person working somewhere (usually for very little per hour) then they take on a “gig job” like ride sharing or food delivery.

These individuals tend to work long hours, and are taxed pretty heavily at the end of the year due to the 1099 filing status for all of that income. Some even get hit with “self employment tax”.

Double bummer whammy.

A sudden realization

After some consideration, I had determined that I too was in a gig job…. for 15 years and just didn’t realize it. Everyday I would go about from one customer to another and at the end of the year I had to deal with all of the lovely taxes involved.

After 15 years, I couldn’t expand, there wasn’t any practical way to hand off the reins. Anyone that I interviewed didn’t have the “knack”. All of my customers had come to expect a certain ability to work through multiple problems. I couldn’t hand it over unless I was confident that the level of service was adequate/equal.
