The Little Things

They used to mean so much

When was the last time you were truly excited about something? I’m not talking about grinning or feeling anxious for quitting time?

I’m talking a “Whoa, that’s amazing!!” or “Look at that, I can’t believe this is happening right in front of me!!”?

I recently watched a little girl in a Target going just bonkers over a golden pineapple paperweight. She kept shouting “Mom! They have pineapples!!” then she’d run back and forth to her mom repeating it.

For some reason it made me smile. Any other day of the week, that kind of behavior would seem unnecessary and annoying to most onlookers including me.

For her Mom, it seemed like it was any other day of the week. She was indifferent to the child and just continued shopping. I then wondered to myself, when was the last time I was that excited about anything?

I sadly couldn’t remember. The best I could muster was maybe, a Christmas morning when I was less than 10. Even then, the details are sketchy.

Then I realized why I was smiling, her excitement gave me joy. For a brief moment, I was excited about the fact they had…
