What we need to do about it

It is no secret that public schools are a joke. Especially in this modern economy, they are struggling to catch up.

They are an institution that is maintained by tax dollars and a continual “bowing down” to those who decide their financial fate. It is a business — the product is test scores. Those test scores are then used to determine the “quality” of the establishment.

The higher the grade of beef, the better the market price.

In one of my favorite books, “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki, it is outlined how schools DO NOT reflect real world behavior. It’s also an educational and entertaining read — this book is where my enlightenment started.

In one example, Kiyosaki says that collaboration is strictly frowned upon in schools. However, in the real world, we use it all the time. Businesses thrive on collaborating. It is how they move forward with innovation.

In schools, they call it “cheating”. If you know something that is helpful, you are not allowed to share it. You are left to sink or swim on your own.

The public school system is designed to create worker bees/drones. The system in place follows a similar pattern to a factory worker from the 40’s. If one were to hypothesize, they may guess that these kids are being trained to work in a factory.

The training goes something like this:

  • Get there on time
  • Stay at your station
  • Produce what we need you to produce
  • Take your breaks at the same time as everyone else
  • Leave and don’t get into trouble so-as to effect your ability to return the next day.
  • Repeat weekly

Public schools is where creativity is brought to the slaughter

One of the greatest TED talks ever given was by Sir Ken Robinson. He states the obvious. In schools, creativity is the enemy. It can not be graded and assigned a value, so it is weeded out.

Take that idea and put it into a real world business. If employees and business owners were to dismiss/punish creativity, they would suffocate and die.

Don’t rely on the schools

It has been said, it takes a village to raise a child. This is true. All those who interact with kids need to take an active role in their development. From their parents to those who employ them.

Everyone has something of value to contribute to their development… And believe it or not, sometimes they can teach us a thing or two we either forgot or didn’t know. So be open minded.

We all must collaborate and share what we have with kids. If not, they are doomed to fail and that is not the human thing to do. We owe them more than they are getting at school.
