Starting your day right puts you in charge. If you do not have control, then someone else does. I didn’t realize how I had this power until explaining it to someone on a warm Caribbean morning while watching the sunrise.

In 2019 I was working in the Caribbean on a cruise ship destination island. We were installing housing for the employees that would be working there.

Every morning I would wake up at around 5:00am and make my cup of earl grey tea. I prefer loose leaf, but when I travel I take Taylors Earl Grey . It is my favorite bag tea (therefore it is the best…insert cocky smile).

I would make the tea and slip out of my sleeping quarters and walk over to the highest easterly building deck that we had. I’d sip on my tea and enjoy the quiet and watch the sunrise.

By having this routine, even in a remote work location, I could maintain that my day starts under my control.

Conversely, if I woke up late, ran out the door, got breakfast on the fly (or not at all) and then rushed the rest of the morning, the day was out of my control. Worse yet, it wasn’t calm. It was pushed and chaotic.

I avoid that awful scenario by taking steps to ensure my day starts FOR me.

I always get to sleep early. There is no need to try and maximize a day at the very end of it. These days, I naturally awaken at 5:00am. I do not need/want the alarm clock.

They are the worst way to start a day.

Do yourself a favor. Adapt an early to bed early to rise routine. The early morning is when you have time for yourself. It is a great gift you deserve.

If you really want to know how valuable it is, don’t trust me, trust the ultra wealthy.

Enjoy the morning, take in the sunrise, have some tea. You are in control.
