Construction workers

Almost everyday we see a broad and diverse range of employed citizens. We see them in the morning commuting to their jobs. We even observe many who are already doing their work while we on ride in.

It is easy to sometimes complain that they’re slowing our travel and are going to make us late. We don’t like hearing the machinery they’re operating and much less having it slow our progress. Inevitably, we start to grow a distain for how they interfere with our routine, even if it is only for a brief irritating moment in time.

How many of us actually appreciate the job they are performing? Like it or not, they’re making things better.

Why some dismiss the trades

When I was a kid every school I went to was under construction in some form. I estimate that three to five years of my entire schooling wasn’t “open during construction”. They are known as the quiet years.

I can remember the dust and the noise and the building being apart but still safe for occupancy. We walked down hallways with no floor tile or finishes. The ceilings were out and the lights were…
